Municipal Market Update. May 2025

Fixed Income Playbook: Investment ideas to manage through uncertain markets

The Power of Private Markets

Municipals:

Updated numbers to make the case for the team to look to be active across Munis.

Performance #s below will be net of fees. TEY #s are based on federal taxes and are not considering those who could additionally benefit from holding 100% MN paper. As discussed, Nuveen has conviction across HY Muni credit for capturing yield + strong fundamentals. I have attached our Muni Market update presentation that we put together on monthly basis.

To sum it up:

Muni yields sit in the 98th percentile over the trailing 10 years, and yields are the largest driver of municipal returns, meaning now is as attractive of a time for municipals as we have seen.

Taxable Fixed Income:

Nuveen is much more than a just Muni Shop. Thanks to our parent company TIAA, we are a Global Fixed Income Credit shop across the board.

Nuveen Preferred Securities and Income Fund, NPSRX

Dist Rate = 6.05%; QDI advantaged (97% in 2024); YTD performance 2.25%; Duration = 4.20yrs

  • Given the highly regulated nature of banks, insurance companies, and utilities, we view preferred securities as a lower risk opportunity to capture more spread and yield by investing farther down the capital structure.
  • High quality issuers can better weather economic downturns. Unlike many other industries, tariffs only indirectly impact banks

Nuveen Strategic Income Fund, FCBYX

Dist Rate = 6.51%; YTD performance 2.17%; Duration = 4.31yrs

  • Our Strategic Income strategy is the best representation of Nuveen’s global fixed income platform. This strategy offers diversified and strategic access to the core and plus sectors of the fixed income market and allows us to showcase our credit specialist model to express our high conviction ideas for the benefit of our clients.
  • We have a long history of achieving strong results for our clients in these asset classes.

Alternatives:

With the Schwab platform, you have access to Private Alternative investments to diversify portfolios for your HNW clients. Andrew Abe, your dedicated Nuveen Alternative specialist, is excellent to leverage on why to utilize within your portfolios.

We have options across Private RE, Private Credit, Farmland, and more. Our Interval Funds within HY Munis and CLOs will ticket like mutual funds for easy adoption.

TIAA and the General account invest alongside you and your clients. Passing down institutional like fee structures for retail clients.
