Dave has 26 years experience in the retirement plans field. This includes management (20 years) and then ownership (11 years) of third party administration firms that specialize in the design and maintenance of tax qualified retirement plans for small businesses. Dave specializes in the creative and compliant development of retirement plans that will meet the specific needs of the business owner & employees.
Dave has been affiliated with Financial Designs (FDI) in a management or ownership capacity since 1978. FDI specializes in working with small businesses in benefits planning matters for key employees as well as all personnel. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota in 1980 and his Master of Business Administration from the College (now University) of St. Thomas in 1983. He was one of the first 100 in the country to obtain the Certified Pension Consultant (CPC) designation from the American Society of Pension Actuaries (now known as the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries) in 1987. He obtained his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation from the American College in 2006.

I specialize in the development and maintenance of tax qualified retirement plans for small businesses, paying particular attention to creative plan design intended to meet the needs of the business owner and key personnel. I have created a compliance program for plan maintenance that focuses on fiduciary liability management for small business owners, including but not limited to: employee communications, investment policy statement development and monitoring, 404(c) compliance, investment product selection and maintenance and third-party vendor relationship management. We also work with small business in the development and placement of group employee benefits plans including life, health and disability insurance and Section 529 college savings plans.
We work with individuals who are often associated with our business clientele in personal financial concerns. We assist in the analysis of existing circumstances and establishment and/or clarification of goals. We develop strategies intended to seek achievement of these financial goals. Our services include periodic monitoring of the progress toward goal achievement with the client on either a quarterly, semi-annual or annual basis. As our independent status implies, we have access to a vast array of financial products intended to assist in goal attainment.
